So I have this old friend, or ‘chum’ as he would say, in his British accent. Peter is a blogging buddy who brings humour and light to interesting, flawed characters, in his short stories. Talented and committed enough to have recently secured his first publishing deal. Also wise. Very wise.
He facebooked me in the midst of one of the worst weeks I have experienced in a long, long time. A week where I was resisting what was happening in my life, distracting myself with busyness and ineffectively suppressing my emotions behind a growing sense of agitation.
All I wanted, was to experience peace; yet I was choosing the opposite – refusing to punch a hole between my automatic way of thinking and open, honest awareness.
His words, were nothing short of a restorative healing balm:
Do you know that phrase about the ‘still centre of the turning wheel’. It is within us all as you know. And you will rediscover yours.
Just like the sun is always shining in the day time, (whether it’s vibrant, or covered by cloud) – wisdom is always there, behind a tangle of well-rehearsed, unhelpful thoughts.
And peace, is the still point of the spinning wheel, right at the centre of the heart.
YES, even in the most difficult and darkest moments.
You are always one step away from inner peace
Not everything that happens to us is “beautiful” and the last thing we are thinking when going through a challenges is, “Wow, this is so awesome”.
But inner peace? You are always one step away from inner peace.
It’s right there, beneath the thoughts and the meaning we are attaching to our thoughts.
It’s there when we stop focusing on the doing and move back to being.
It’s there when we bring and awareness to our breathing and slow it all down.
It’s there in surrender and acceptance.
And, in my experience – It’s a slam dunk , when we actively practice gratitude.
