Welcome to the fifth ‘Rockin’ Mamma interview, featuring Nicole Avery from Planning With Kids.
For many Australians and in particular, Aussie Mums; Nicole Avery and her blog, need no introduction.
Nic Avery first popped onto my radar around nine months ago when I experienced my first huge spike in traffic. Elated and surprised, I soon discovered that it was not due to my budding brilliance as a newbie blogger, but to Nic having shared one of my posts on Facebook!
Shortly afterwards, Nic was
crazy kind enough to put my name forward for a television interview, which never panned out but, left her firmly imprinted in my mind as a woman who is a champion of others!
Welcome Nic, who is no doubt celebrating a recent site redesign, her own App and new e-book – Blog Boost: Blogging smarter
What’s the one thing you do to take care of yourself?
Exercise. Even when I am at my busiest I still make sure I get to the gym 6 -7 times a week. I get up and head to the gym before anyone else gets up. It gives me a kick start to the day and helps keep my energy levels high.
What’s one thing you love about yourself?
My commitment levels. Whether it be to family, friends or work, when I commit to something I see it through and can be relied upon. I will see it through even if it gets tough and not so much fun!
What’s one thing you know to be true about yourself?
I am very determined. This can some times make me a little head strong, thankfully my husband is an incredibly patient man.
What’s one thing that used to scare you that no longer does?
Failing. Sometimes I would be frightened to try something out or try something new if I wasn’t 100% sure it would work out. Working online has taught me that sometimes you just need to have a go or try a new idea. You can always stop, fix, or change it.
As Seth Godin says:
“The opportunity to step up and to fail (and then to fail again, and to fail again) and to continue failing until we succeed is greater now than it has ever been.”
What have you overcome?
I kicked my cigarette addiction 15 years ago. I used to smoke quite a lot back then and had tried many times before without success.
The difference with my attempt 15 years ago was that it was more about a mindset. I didn’t think about it as “giving up” smoking – this implied that it is something I still wanted to do. I stopped smoking as I didn’t want it to be part of my life any more. (I read Allen Carr’s Easy Way To Stop Smoking, if you want more info on that.)
I haven’t had a smoke since nor have I wanted to.
Where do you feel completely safe and secure?
At home with my family. It is often noisy, messy and there is lots going on, but it is also what gives me my greatest comfort.
What do you typically do when you are sad?
Listen to music and often go for a run. And most often at the same time. I listen to music a lot and find it calming.
What’s something you can always lose yourself in?
Blogging. I love it and have to sometimes force myself to turn the computer off late at night.
Describe yourself in three adjectives
Organised, determined, nurturing
What are you naturally good at?
Planning! I have an analytical mind so I find it very easy to break tasks down in to manageable chunks and work my way through things.
What’s the best thing about being a mum?
I love watching my kids grow and develop their sense of self. I love seeing them make the right choices, through the values we have instilled in them as parents.
What’s the one piece of advice you would offer to help other women/mums?
Taking care of yourself is incredibly important. Make sure you plan time to do things that are important to you. Your family needs to understand that you have needs too and they need to fit into the family schedule as well.
What’s something you have always wanted to try?
Surfing. I would love to learn how to surf. I am planning to do this some time this year!
What are three positive experiences that happened to you in 2011?
- Having my book published! When I started blogging I never imagined it would lead to a book.
- Taking the family on a sponsored trip to Hong Kong Disneyland. It was the first time we traveled overseas as a family and we had an amazing time.
- Going to Blog World Expo in Los Angeles – completely changed my perspective on where I want to take my blogging.
What mistakes do you make over and over again?
Over commiting myself. There are so many things I want to do and I also find it hard to say no as well, so a couple of times a year for the last couple of years, I have found myself very over worked. Will be trying not to do this as much from now on!
